People say that the American civil justice system is outrageous and in need of reform, and I tend to agree. But a Canadian court has taken the prize for most frivolous lawsuit ever.

It seems a father grounded his 12 year old girl for posting inappropriate pictures of herself on the internet. The girl took her father to court and the court overturned the father's decision. What on Earth is the court doing even hearing this case? I think if it were my daughter I'd paddle her ass until she couldn't sit down for a week and ground her again when she got home.

This is a real story.

Quote:
OTTAWA (AFP) - A Canadian court has lifted a 12-year-old girl's grounding, overturning her father's punishment for disobeying his orders to stay off the Internet, his lawyer said Wednesday.

The girl had taken her father to Quebec Superior Court after he refused to allow her to go on a school trip for chatting on websites he tried to block, and then posting "inappropriate" pictures of herself online using a friend's computer.

Yep, read that story yesterday. Seems that the girl bringing the case against her dad is actually part of an on-going custody battle between her mother and him...Basically, the mother encouraged the daughter to do this to help strengthen her chances of getting custody of the child...

I can't believe the court thought it was 'harsh punishment' to deny a child a field trip for punishment? I could understand if he'd beaten her black and blue and ruling in the child's favor...But this is just plain ridiculous and is going to have further ramifications in regards to parental rights in the future.

I don't know who deserves grounding more in this situation...The girl, her mother, or the judges that made this stupid ruling....

I agree, they shouldn't even have heard this case. And even if they did, as soon as they heard that the kid did something bad like posting inappropriate pictures of herself on the internet they should have ruled in favor of the father. How do these idiots expect society to get better if they don't even allow fathers to discipline their children?

I know this was in Canada but it still hits a little close to home. And not to sound like a nut or anything, even if I am, but this is the kind of over-bearing government that a lot of people have been fearful of since America was founded. I've heard these arguments, "Oh it's just a seatbelt law, they won't go further." But how much more intrusive can you get than telling parents that they can't ground their kids? A spanking is one thing and debatable but who in their right mind would argue that a parent doesn't have the right to ground their child for inappropriate behavior?

This is outrageous! How can the court sided with the kid, this is a simple case of parental discipline. This has gone too far.
