Ann Romney Doesn't Recall Contribution to Abortion Group

I guess the term "I dont recall" is a new Republican slogan.

Ann Romney Doesn't Recall Contribution to Abortion Group

ABC News Tahman Bradley Reports:

Former Gov. Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, said Sunday she does not remember making a contribution to an abortion-rights group in the early 1990s.

"A check for $100 written in 1993, I believe, was when the check was…I don't even remember writing the check," Mrs. Romney said on "Fox News Sunday".

"I mean, how do you remember all the checks you've written, you know, how many years ago was that?"

The Romney campaign confirmed to ABC News in May that Mrs. Romney gave a $150 donation to Planned Parenthood in 1994.

The journey to a "pro-life" position came for Mrs. Romney at the same time her husband changed his position on the issue while serving as Massachusetts governor, she said.

"I've had to make a decision, a personal decision on this and it came pretty much at the same time with Mitt…and I had to come out on the side of life."

Anne is his wife and as such , who cares? they will make a deal out of this because he is the front runner, right now. I mean it was almost 15 yrs ago and the way the Mitt flips and flops, it does not surprise me. Since I am not trying to sway the voter, this is not an issue to me.

It shows me the Romney's aren't as anti-abortion as they claim. They changed their stand on abortion for political reasons, not because their convictions changed.

I'll wager they are still leaning pro-choice. They just won't admit it.

Granted Ann Romney could have been quite busy at the time, but as the wife of a church leader, you just don't "forget" that you made a donation to an abortion-rights group.

Gotcha.

Here is an article that explains Romney's abortion stand before this election started. It's from 2005.

Governor Mitt Romney, who has said his abortion stance dates to his mother's 1970 run for US Senate, released a campaign document yesterday that an aide said showed his mother supported abortion rights.

Lenore Romney, an unsuccessful candidate for US Senate in Michigan, said in her platform, ''I support and recognize the need for more liberal abortion rights while reaffirming the legal and medical measures needed to protect the unborn and pregnant woman [sic]." She also endorsed ''greatly expanded programs of providing adequate family planning services to all those who want but can't afford them," adding that ''I would oppose any governmental coercion of parents."

Romney is all over the place on abortion.

Romney delineates his abortion stance

By GLEN JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer

BOSTON - Asked about abortion rights last week, Mitt Romney grew exasperated and said: "I'm pro-life; it would be great if we could just leave it at that."

But as his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination progresses, Romney is revealing more complex thoughts on the subject for which he has already been labeled a flip-flopper. It shows even his current position defies easy labels or rote town-hall meeting answers.

Before audiences in early voting Iowa and New Hampshire, where Romney leads in the polls, the former Massachusetts governor insisted he wants the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade and allow the states to determine their own abortion policies. He said it's preferable to the "one-size-fits-all" federal approach embedded in the court's 1973 landmark decision that established a constitutional right to abortion.

Yet in recent weeks, he has acknowledged he also supports a plank in the 2004 Republican Party platform calling for a federal "Human Life Amendment" to the Constitution. It would repeal Roe v. Wade with an eye toward banning abortion nationwide.
