OK, so what is new? They will talk and talk and nothing will get done. Business as usual.

After faltering on their war agenda and on expanding children’s health care, Democratic congressional leaders are hungry for a domestic policy victory, and they’ve set their sights on energy efficiency legislation.

But even on an issue about which Democrats have preached and promised for years, their majorities aren’t translating into easy power. And it’s not just those Big Oil-loving Republicans who are to blame.

This is the most telling sentence of that whole article:

But it would be a major policy victory that the Democrats could use to shrug off charges of being a do-nothing Congress.

If they were more worried about protecting our future than they were about the next election we wouldn't have this problem. But then again, if dreams were popsicles everyone would suck. Knowing this, how can the average citizen even begin to care about the process of government when he knows it won't change a thing?

Yet another reason to find something other than nukes for power.

The Energy Department has not finished plans to consolidate storage of nuclear bomb fuel and other high-risk materials now spread among numerous sites, even though the department said in 2005 that it would do so within about a year, according to a Government Accountability Office report to be released Monday.

As a result, the department is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to defend additional sites.

The G.A.O. had reported that the Energy Department was putting off making security improvements at some of the storage sites because the sites were due to be phased out. But the new report makes clear that the goal of shutting down some obsolete weapons and research centers, and simplifying the security job by centralizing “special nuclear material,” as bomb fuel is called, has yet to advance from concept to plan, let alone to finished project.

Since they do not have a plan for that, what is the plan for nuke plant by-product?
