"american indans"

Postby Kizzume on Sat Oct 20, 2007 11:20 pm

Why isn't that section called "Native Americans"? They're not from India, they're from America, unless it's really supposed to be a section for people from India who have moved to America...

I know, PC stuff, but still...

I guess I'm WAY overly-sensitive about the subject of native and indigenous cultures.... :(

You know, that's a damned good question.

There is still some controversy today surrounding the term "Native American". There are some who prefer to be called American Indian instead. Because there are a few people who insist they're "Native American" because they were born here. And, well, it's kind of hard to argue with that. So I went with American Indians.

Plus, it seemed to fit more with the whole American Politics theme.

Well, I'm not a PC person and I've known them as Native Americans all my life, and to call them by any other name just sounds weird to me.

American Indians is fine by me also. I know a lot of Canadian Indians but even they call themselves Native Americans up here. Our local tribes have a lot of dual-citizens in their ranks where we live so close to the border.

To be honest I wasn't even aware it was called American Indians until it was just mentioned. When I post topics there I'm thinking Native American section so I guess that shows how much I pay attention.

Maybe I have a mental block or something but they are NA to me. When I discuss them I refer to them as NA. I guess you can't always teach an old dog new tricks.

Well, I don't think it's that big a deal. Some people prefer NA, some prefer AI. Like most things, it depends on who you talk to.

It doesn't REALLY matter to me THAT much--I just know that some people may be put off by that name--some people may turn away because of it.

Well, I've found that you can't please everyone no matter what you choose. Coyote knows how most of us feel about the whole NA versus Indian issue so I'm fine with whatever he chose for a title of the forum. I guess I was comfortable enough with the title I didn't even think about what it was called.

I am a NA or American Indian. we do not care for it represents all of us. If yoiu ask another NA what is his preference, he/she will say whatever nation they are. i am an Apache. Our most influential organization in the 70's was the American Indian Movement. It is just a title that non-NAs use to describe the race or nationality. We realize that usually no offense was inferred.

Funny, other Indians have given me crap in the past for using Native American. I guess it boils down once again to who you talk to.

Actually you are right. I just say I am an Apache, but will use NA when dealing with a generalized subject. Neither really bothers me.
