As long as we remain in Iraq they have no incentive to resolve their differences.

He won't accomplish much by downsizing government. Laughing That just means the number of lawmakers disagreeing is smaller but the dissent is the same.

Maliki is trying to do away with the Sunni's that are in his way. He thinks that with a Shi'a backing he will get his wishes. I do not think so, but we will see.

Maliki is one of the biggest problems in their government. He should be one of the first things they change. IMO.

They should put someone in there that they can support. IMO.

Our influence on their government just makes matters worse.

An excellent sentiment, but the prob with it is whoever we choose to run the govt, and let's not be naive, we chose the candidates, will not have the best interest of ALL the Iraqi people at heart.

If someone doesn't do something soon about the gridlock in their government they may end up with a real civil war on their hands, much worse than they have now.IMO.

You know, they should have realized there would never be democracy as we know it. At some point they need to realize the Iraqi's need to choose their own destiny.

It seems the Kurds aren't too happy about the new oil law

Quote:
Kurds speak out against key oil law

The Kurds made clear Wednesday they oppose the latest draft of the bill, which al-Maliki said on July 3 had been approved unanimously by his Cabinet. His aides say the draft was passed after changes were made to an earlier version Kurds had said they supported.

The top oil official in the Kurd's northern autonomous zone rejected those changes. The amendments "reduce the powers of the (Kurdish) region and should not be approved," Kurdistan's Natural Resource Minister Ashti Hawrami told a joint meeting of the Iraqi and Kurdish regional parliaments in the northern city of Irbil.

Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said the amendments to the draft — which have not been made public — "were legal and dealt with the language but did not change the core."

I would expect the Kurds to be against everything, but the part that gives them control of their oil. After allk they are trying to quietly build a Kurdistan.

Until they can get the Kurds on board there is no chance of passing a new oil law.It won't be the Maliki government that unites them either.IMO.
