WASHINGTON — After more than a year of wrangling, the Senate handed the White House a major victory on Tuesday by voting to broaden the government’s spy powers and to give legal protection to phone companies that cooperated in President Bush’s program of eavesdropping without warrants.

One by one, the Senate rejected amendments that would have imposed greater civil liberties checks on the government’s surveillance powers. Finally, the Senate voted 68 to 29 to approve legislation that the White House had been pushing for months. Mr. Bush hailed the vote and urged the House to move quickly in following the Senate’s lead.

Among the presidential contenders, Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, voted in favor of the final measure, while the two Democrats, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, did not vote

Obama and Clinton didn't even vote.

What a joke those 2 assmonkey's are. Clinton has no backbone and neither does Obama. This must be the change they preach about.

There were three no votes, Clinton, Obama and Graham. At least Obama did show up...Clinton was too busy to show up. Both my Senators voted yes...time to work getting them thrown out of office.

Being there and not voting is even worse, but then again Obama is known for that.

Bush is gonna keep playing the fear card until the bitter end.




President Bush said Friday that "our country is in more danger of an attack" because of Congress' failure to extend a law that makes it easier for the government to spy on foreign phone calls and e-mails that pass through the United States.

Democrats, in turn, accused Bush of fear-mongering and misrepresenting the facts.

Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney met with Republican congressional leaders in the Oval Office to discuss the impasse with the Democratic-led House. Lawmakers left Thursday for a 12-day recess without acting on the law, which expires at midnight Saturday. The president said Congress should complete work on the bill as soon as possible.

Bush argues that without the extension, the intelligence community will not have the tools necessary for protecting the nation from terrorism. Democrats, equally adamant, say he has the authority he needs to intercept terrorist communications, even if the law expires.

Sounds as though they ALL want to keep the fear card and corporate into the playing field.

This anti-American legislation makes Washington our biggest terrorist threat, IMHO.

Uh...weren't the democrats about change back in 2006 when they were trying to win seats in Congress? Two years later they are running on 'change' but didn't do it back in 2006 after they won, why are they going to do it now? And a more important question, why the hell are people still voting for them?

I think Stephen Colbert said it best, "The democrats can't stand up to the president or republicans but they can tear a former MLB pitcher to bits."
