What Are The Issues?

The election is only a few months away but I am confused about the issues. Living in Australia I only see the headline grabbing quotes from the candidates. I have to research the internet to find factual policy statements from either side.

So far I don't know very much about each candidates detailed policies on The Economy, Defence , Trade, Immigration and Health Care. To me the economy and defence should be the two major issues. Have either candidate released detailed policy information about their intentions.

In Australia we have a costing system where each political parties election promises are costed by Treasury and we are able to make a reasonably informed decision. Is there something similar in US.

Do the canditates make policy statements that outline all their plans for the future? and if so when do they make this?

I hope someone can give me some info or steer me in the right direction to find it.

Usually, from what I've seen of elections here they won't give any detailed plans until the debates in September or October, if they give any at all. That's the great thing about American politics. Neither candidate will give any details about their plans. Obama says he's going to change this and that but he doesn't say how and he doesn't say what he's going to change. They speak with a lot of quantity but no substance.

Also, the main issues this election seem to be the economy, fuel prices, the GWOT, and health care.

Yeah, for once serious issues are on the table instead of just God, Guns and Gays.

I'm looking forward to hearing some real debates in the fall or whenever they start. I actually kind of like McCain except for his "never surrender" policy in Iraq, whatever the hell that means, exactly.

You mean you don't want to hear about the Catholic church not giving communion to those that vote for Obama? :twisted:

It is good that now the candidates can't go on about divisive issues that only affect a small number of Americans. It's important that we solve those issues but if I have a kitten pissing on my carpet and a gorilla wrecking my living room which one should I deal with first?

I'm not very optimistic about either candidate doing good for America, but I am happy that more and more people are putting the petty stuff aside. Hopefully they'll start demanding answers and put the politicians to the fire when they try to skirt the issues.

I think that's a learned philosophy he picked up from the Tim Allen movie "Galaxy Quest". "Never Give Up, Never Surrender" :wink:
