The US has issued Eritrea with its strongest warning yet over its alleged support for terrorism.

A senior US official said the presence of an exiled Somali Islamist leader in Asmara this week was further evidence Eritrea gave sanctuary to terrorists.

The gathering of further intelligence could lead to Eritrea being named as a state sponsor of terrorism - followed by sanctions, the official said.

Just as I expected. Bush is looking to lip service on the problem and is willing to use the least effective method of dealing with the problem they say exists.

That is about the only option he has, since his dirty little wars elsewhere he has NO bite with his bark.

The statement said that the letter was intended as a formal legal measure to give Eritrea notice that unless she returned to compliance Ethiopia would be forced to consider its options.

I think they all look for an excuse to go to war in that region. It's hard to even keep up with who going to war with who.

Ethiopia has threatened to terminate the pact that ended its border war with Eritrea in 2000, a move that could bring the two countries closer to a new conflict in the Horn of Africa.

In a letter sent on Tuesday, Seyoum Mesfin, Ethiopia's foreign minister, told Eritrea it had breached the agreements that ended the war and that one of Ethiopia's options was to respond by terminating all or part of those agreements.

Ethiopia and Eritrea are the region's bitterest enemies. Eritrea seceded from its bigger neighbour in 1993 and the two countries fought a war from 1998-2000 that killed at least 70,000 people.

I think it is highly unlikely that it will be a solely UN prob. Why? The Persian Gulf and the flow of oil.
