DOVER, N.H. - Against a backdrop of brilliant autumn colors, a national environmental organization that provides direct support to campaigns, endorsed Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards yesterday, giving a boost to his efforts in this green-friendly state.

"We are endorsing John Edwards because we believe he is the candidate most committed, and best prepared to halt global warming and promote a healthy, livable planet for our families and our future," said Brent Blackwelder, president of Friends of the Earth Action.

The San Francisco-based sister organization of Friends of the Earth praised Edwards for his plans to cap greenhouse gas emissions and create a new fund to invest in renewable energy, and for his opposition to building new nuclear plants.

DES MOINES - Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama acknowledged Sunday that Americans would pay higher costs for electricity if his environmental program to vastly reduce greenhouse gas emissions is successful.

Speaking to about 200 people at Des Moines' downtown library to discuss the relationship of faith and environmental stewardship, the senator from Illinois said his proposals to temper the effects of global warming include a cap on carbon emissions to effect greenhouse gas reductions of 80 percent by 2050.

"On the front end at least, when you set up a cap, that is going to increase the costs, the production costs of electricity, for these companies. What will they do? They are going to pass them on to you," Obama said. "And so, I hope everybody understands, if we are serious about dealing with global warming, there is going to be a spike in the unit costs of electricity."

Finally, he said something that makes sense. That's the catch 22. Nobody wants to make that sacrifice so nothing gets changed.

But since these corporations have gotten a free ride for so many years , I say let them absorb most of the cost.

A good start to getting back on track with emissions is to enforce the current laws. I think there is a certain amout of looking the other way where violations are concerned.

But corporations can [play the game by buying pollution credits from companies that have earn them. A game for the top polluters to continue to pollute. It is all a game that corporations play, few are serious, only nthat they appear to be serious.

Pollution credits? That sounds like some sort of shell game to me. Why not just set the standards and abide by them without the gimmicks?

It is a game and the planet is losing!
