Obesity is just one of many controllable health factors that many American's suffer from. I don't see the logic in sigling out the obese for criticism over health care costs. There are loads of other, non-obese Americans who costs the health care system just as much due to other life choices (smoking, dangerous activities, drinking, illegal drugs, etc. etc.)

I know that Frag but we are talking about obesity in this thread. My point in singling this out is that of the other conditions you discuss obesity is probably the easiest to correct for most people. Do you not agree? I don't think Government ought to legislate it but I can understand the frustration that anyone who would support such a bill feels.

No. I don't agree. The easiest ones to correct would be smoking or excessive drinking.

So you think addiction to nicotine or Alcoholism is easier to correct as a behavior than over eating. Wow, never heard that one before.

Now you have.

Nicotine & alcohol are chosen - by adults (mostly). Many obese people are fighting both genetics & the fact that they were taught poor eating habits when growing up.

Were we not told a few years ago that Alcoholism is genetic also? The majority of Obese people are not fighting genetics they are fighting a Big Mac and the Big Mac is winning.

Source for your statistics, please? You also ignored the fact that I said eating behavior is learned. Those who many not be affected genetically can still be affected by taught behavior during their childhood.

LOL, my eyes, and 41 years on this earth. Show me your source for the fact you state that MOST obese people are fighting genetics.

Don't turn the tables here. YOU stared it by claiming most of them were NOT fighting genetics. You show me YOUR source/stats. You're the one who said it (I simply said 'Many' - you said 'The Majority').

Your eyes are not a 'respectable news source'. ;) Ha!

That's a cop out. You are the one claiming that for the "majority" of obese people that genetics is not a factor. That's a BS claim if you can't back it up.

I never claimed the opposite, so I don't need to show you a thing.

By the way, if you can discern someone's entire genetic makeup (including all genetic factors that may lead to any and every type of disease or disorder) contact the CDC now! They'd love to have someone with that amazing ability!

Well since I do normally research something before i open my mouth, or let my fingers type I went ahead and did some precursor searches. Most sites take both arguments, behavorial, and genetics. The strongest arguments against genetics is the fact that not all countries suffer the same rate of infection as they do with most other genetic disorders. In other words, just for example, if in America every 10th baby is born with a 6th toe and it is deemed as genetic, then in Europe every 10th baby would have a 6th toe also. Well that does not seem to be the case in regards to obesity. High in US, Europe, and Japan, low everywhere else. Whens the last time you saw a fat chinese guy? More of them then any of us so wouldn't they have a huge obese population if it was genetic? Genes don't know boundaries of countries.

Nice 'general' genetic info there, but it doesn't back up your claim.

That's beside the point anyway. The whole topic here is whether or not people feel that the law this thread brings up goes too far. I believe we've both already said that yes, it does.

Oh, and a really fat Chinese guy sat next to me on the bus just today - and I was in Europe earlier this year (Germany, France & England) and saw plenty of obese people.
