Truth About The Liberty

In the past I have written about this incident. I found this while surfing.

Forty years ago this week, I was asked to investigate the heaviest attack on an American ship since World War II. As senior legal counsel to the Navy Court of Inquiry, it was my job to help uncover the truth regarding Israel's June 8, 1967, bombing of the Navy intelligence ship Liberty.

On that sunny, clear day 40 years ago, Israel's combined air and naval forces attacked the Liberty for two hours, inflicting 70 percent casualties. Thirty-four American sailors died, and 172 were injured. The Liberty remained afloat only by the crew's heroic efforts.

It probably will not, sadly. That is why I try to bring attention to it whenever I can. I just wished more people would actually care.

It's going to be a hard sell when so many officials are trying to keep this hush hush, especially Israel.

I saw a history channel program about this once. Apparently they have recorded audio of President Johnson and Robert McNamara recalling, twice, fighter jets that were sent assist the USS Liberty. In the audio Johnson says something along the lines of "I don't care if that damn ship (USS Liberty) is sunk and all the men drown." Not only that but it seems the Israelis either didn't identify the target or knew it wasn't Egyptian. This whole incident sounds suspicious to me.

It is also said that he recalled the planes and said"I will noit embarass an ally". Few peoploe reme,mber this and even fewer seem to care. It is sad that Americans died like they did and it is mostly unknown.

I'm surprised at how few prople even know about this attack. Hell, I didn't know about it CHUQ until you brought it up. It's been pushed under the rug for years to keep this hush-hush.

I knoiw and that is why I try to put it out there. israel gets mostly good press in this country it is tinme for all to realize that all is not that good with the country.

New info on the attack has come to light.

Bryce Lockwood, Marine staff sergeant, Russian-language expert, recipient of the Silver Star for heroism, ordained Baptist minister, is shouting into the phone.

"I'm angry! I'm seething with anger! Forty years, and I'm seething with anger!"

Lockwood was aboard the USS Liberty, a super-secret spy ship on station in the eastern Mediterranean, when four Israeli fighter jets flew out of the afternoon sun to strafe and bomb the virtually defenseless vessel on June 8, 1967, the fourth day of what would become known as the Six-Day War.

I agree, tumble--and then I realize that most people have no idea about the incident. I try to let people know what happened, but NO ONE cares.
